5 per Day – Short film

Director: Jun Cordon / Length: 5.07 min / Year: 2013 / Production: 29.11 Productions

Synopsis

A Korean baby, a hand that holds him, a Korean woman dressed as a flight attendant, she is looking for something, but what? There’s a beep, an electronic display comes to life. Couples pass by, children wait their turn…

The project

In October 2011, Jun Cordon was invited to Seoul in Korea to participate in the 1st Festival of Korean Arts and Adoptions with his documentary “Return to Korea, 30 years later…”.

At the time, there was controversy in the local press surrounding a priest in a small town of the Seoul metropolitan area who had set up a “Baby box”, similar to the baby letterbox of the 1970s. It allowed mothers to abandon their children anonymously. This latest scandal over abandoned babies pushed the government to shed the image of a “baby exporting country”. They therefore regulated international adoption to a limit of five children per day.

This story and the new legislation gave the filmmaker the urge to denounce the voluntary policy of international adoption in Korea.
